The Author....

Author Pam PughAuthor Pam PughThe author of this authoritive publication on The Hilston Park Estate in Monmouthshire, is a passionate countrywoman. Pam Pugh spent her childhood on the family farm in Herefordshire; marriage then brought her to her husband's farm in the neighbouring county of Monmouthshire.

Since 1958 Pam and her husband Vernon, have lived and farmed at the Home Farm, formerly part of the Hilston Park Estate and adjacent to the beautiful mansion house of Hilston.

In addition to her love of the countryside, Pam has a passion for history and especially for the history of her surroundings. For many years, she has been collecting photographs of the area, principally of the parishes of Skenfrith and St Maughans.

Living as she does next door to the house of Hilston Park has given a focus to her research and Pam has been able to trace owners and occupiers of Hilston from medieval times to 1971, when the estate was sold and the house itself acquired by Monmouthshire County Council to serve as a school for pupils with special needs and from 1990 as an Educational Outdoor Centre to serve the county.

The second part of the book is devoted to social life in the district, some of which is centred on the Hilston Estate and includes memories of local pastimes.

Many books have been read and consulted, documents deciphered, local residents interviewed; past residents and their relatives contacted, together with past and present staff at Hilston Park, The result is this fascinating and informative book, with which so many people have been involved.
